Principal’s message
It’s hard to believe, as we look at the young people in our school today, that they will join the long line of impressive alumni who are leading the way in their respective professions. That is the legacy of Leeds Grammar School, Leeds Girls’ High School (LGHS) and GSAL.
One of the privileges of my role is meeting so many members of our alumni community, seeing how distinguished they have become and hearing the credit they give to the school as a foundation for their ambition, diligence and success, all underpinned by a core set of values.
Last night, many of us were fortunate to tour the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) with ‘old boys’ Ian Ritchie and Michael Hann. Ian has been at the centre of the UK’s sporting success for many years, not just as a renowned broadcaster but also Chief Executive of both the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and AELTC. Michael was the Wimbledon Boys’ Singles Champion in 1955, an achievement realised whilst he was still at school! Since then, in addition to a highly successful non-tennis career, he has served on the AELTC for over 24 years and his contemporaries credit him with raising the profile of tennis at the school from the 1950s.
Tomorrow, the old girls’ class who left LGHS 50 years ago will meet for a reunion at school, and this year the Old Leodensians celebrate their centenary, reminding us that their mission was to honour those members of the school who lost their lives in the First World War.
Talk about being inspired. Those students who have gone before our current pupils are leading fascinating and celebrated lives, they make a difference to the world around them. I look forward with real anticipation to see what the children of GSAL today will achieve in the future!
