Principal’s message

The Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, is famed for his contribution to the development of ontology, the study of ‘being’ and he insisted that change was fundamental to this: “Nothing endures but change.”

This time of year sees most of the school involved in meetings and visits about next year, including a variety of moving up, induction and transition opportunities, for parents as well as pupils. The excitement of meeting new teachers and making new friends is clear for the children, just as it can be daunting for some. And of course that is all a very natural and normal set of emotions in an ever-changing world. Our role, as a school, is to balance the best of stability with the best about (inevitable) change that will develop skills for life in our young people.

Next week, the Alwoodley campus shows the first signs of the changes to come when the builders’ compound appears before the new bridge under the porte cochère is constructed over the summer holidays. This is all part of the current Junior School’s expansion to be ready to welcome Rose Court to Alwoodley in a year’s time.

So, as we prepare for the next season in our children’s lives, whatever that may be, and the next development for our school, may we remember the words of Virginia Woolf, too: “And all the lives we ever lived and all the lives to be are full of trees and changing leaves.” Trees growing stronger every year, leaves coming and going, beauty upon dappled beauty, a sense of stability and longevity alongside a sense of change and progress. Let’s embrace the best of both!

Sue Woodroofe
Principal

House Dance Competition

Monday 24 June at 16:00

House Dance will soon be upon us, involving students in Y7 to Y10. This year’s theme is based around props and Y10 students lead and choreograph the routines.

Each house needs to choreograph a four minute routine to music they have chosen and edited themselves, and has chosen a prop to frame their dance around – no easy feat for our Y10 leaders!

Students will be performing their routines in the assembly hall from 16:00 to 17:30, with judging being held in time for the late buses. Although there will not be space in the hall due to the popularity of this event with students, we invite family and friends to watch all of the dances from the theatre foyer where the entire show will be live-streamed onto the big screen. Should you wish to join us, please simply meet a student helper in senior school reception from 16:00 and they will escort you to the theatre foyer ready for the first dance at 16:15.

As part of the Rose Court relocation project, building works are due to start on the new glass walkway in the porte cochère area from Saturday 22 June so that it is ready for September.
