Drama
The Grammar School at Leeds hosts a thriving drama department that is enjoyed throughout the year.
A senior school production is performed each year, along with regular performances by students plus they can also join the drama club. With help from drama staff and our theatre technician, drama students learn the ropes backstage as well as improving their performance skills. Affiliations with theatres across Leeds also help the department to offer the students insight and opportunities in drama outside the school.
The new GSAL Performing Arts Centre
In 2024-25 work will be completed on the new GSAL Performing Arts Centre.
A 350-seat theatre is at the heart of our plans, complete with oak-panelled walls, optimised acoustics and retractable seating for total versatility. The auditorium will also feature the latest audio technology and LED lighting, giving backstage teams the experience of operating professional-standard equipment. The studio theatre will be ideal for teaching, with classrooms, workshop spaces, changing rooms, rehearsal and costume storage close by. It is a flexible space with low level windows to let the light in and when required, full height black-out curtains to keep distractions out, creating an inhibition-free zone for performers to experiment and take risks.
Watch the PAC film
Whether it’s through one-off show stopper performances or in the way music, drama, dance and performance are embedded in school life, the arts have value for everyone.
The new Performing Arts Centre will inspire the next generation of GSAL pupils with a passion for the arts and prepare them for their futures – whatever they might hold.
