GSAL’s first ever golfing for bursaries event has teed off a fundraising drive to increase financial assistance for pupils whose families need support with school fees.

School staff past and present, parents, governors and alumni met at Leeds Golf Centre to play the course in teams of four before rounding off the day with dinner and an auction of ‘things money can’t buy’.

Leeds Golf Centre was made available thanks to the generosity of GSAL parent and governor Naveen Ahmed, whose company Parklane Properties has recently refurbished and upgraded the complex.

The evening’s auction was hosted by retired senior deputy head Peter Jolly, who has this year taken on the chairmanship of the Foundation of Leeds Grammar School and Leeds Girls’ High School.

Peter said: “The trustees of the foundation have a mission going forward to apply our efforts in strengthening bursarial support for those pupils, present and future, who would not and could not be at school without it. This has been the perfect setting for us to get together to raise money for a great cause and we would like to express our thanks to Naveen for making the day possible.”

Speakers at the dinner included Sian Foley, national coaching development manager for England Netball, who spoke eloquently about how the support she received to attend Leeds Girls’ High School had given her the confidence to pursue a career in sport.

The event has boosted bursary funds by around £6,000 and is set to become an annual fixture in the school calendar.
