GSAL has announced its head boy and girl team for the next academic year.

Congratulations to Kate Downie, Jack Harrison, Aneesah Kabba Kamara and Matthew Li who have been successful following a demanding selection process.

As well as being role models to pupils, their duties will include representing the school at public occasions, such as open mornings and giving the vote of thanks at Speech Day.

Speaking on behalf of the new team, Jack, the son of OL Jeremy Harrison, said: “We are greatly honoured to have been appointed to these roles. We are looking forward to the challenges ahead and being able to put back all that GSAL has given us.”

Jack is a keen sportsman and represents the school at rugby, football and cricket. He was named 1st team Cricketer of the Year last year and plays for Yorkshire County Cricket Club (CCC).

Matthew is a talented astronomer and has the distinction of being the first recipient of the Peter Young prize for astronomy. The award, which was set up by the class of ’72 in memory of OL Peter, an associate professor of astronomy, who died aged 26, was presented to Matthew at Speech Day 2012.

He also plays violin and currently leads the school symphony orchestra, as well as being a member of the GSAL string quartet. He enjoys debating and reached the Cambridge Union debating final earlier this year, for which he received full school colours.

Aneesah, whose mum Annabel Lee was a pupil at LGHS, is a talented netballer who has represented the school for a number of years. She is a member of the senior team which has just won the U19 Independent Schools Netball national championship, and came second in the England Netball national schools championships.

Kate’s interests in school include running and the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. She has completed the Leeds half marathon and recently competed in the Harewood 10km ‘night terror’ run with two other GSAL students, winning the fastest team time and finishing as the third fastest woman runner. Kate plays guitar and helps to organise and run Band’s Night and GSAL’s Got Talent and is currently working towards her Duke of Edinburgh gold award.

Head of lower sixth Paul Rushworth, who takes over as director of sixth form next year, said: “Student leadership plays a crucial role in school life at GSAL and I’m delighted that Kate, Jack, Aneesah and Matthew have been appointed.

“We are extremely fortunate to have such a talented and enthusiastic group of students taking up these key positions and I know that they will be every bit as successful as their outstanding predecessors.
