GSAL Has Highest Oxbridge Rate In Yorkshire

Thursday 14 July 2011

The Grammar School at Leeds has Yorkshire’s highest rate of university applicants accepted to Oxford or Cambridge.

A report by the Sutton Trust revealed that more than one-in-10 of GSAL students going into higher education secured an Oxbridge place.

The Trust, a charity which promotes social mobility in education, has published tables showing which schools produced the most Oxbridge entrants between 2007 and 2009.

According to the report, five schools sent more students to Oxbridge over three years than the bottom 2000 put together. In those years 71 GSAL students were offered places to study at either Oxford or Cambridge colleges.

When it came to the 30 most selective universities in the UK, 48.2 per cent of independent school pupils were accepted compared to just 18 per cent of pupils from non selective state schools. On average at GSAL more than 70 per cent of students receive an offer from a Russell Group or 1994 Group University.

Higher education coordinator at the school, Andrea Walker, said: “This is great news for the school.  Our academic results are strong, but getting into Oxford or Cambridge has always been about more than achieving good grades at A level.

“We make sure our students have the strongest chance possible by offering support and guidance throughout their education here, as well as when they are making their university choices, ensuring they produce strong applications and are fully prepared for the interview process.”
