GSAL invests in the student experience

Monday 11 September 2017

Students returning for the new term at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) will notice a fresh new look and upgraded facilities in key areas of the school.

The school has invested £621,000 in a major programme of works to update the sixth form centre, main refectory, assembly hall and theatre foyer. Using local contractors and suppliers following a full tendering process, the works were delivered on time and on budget ready to welcome students for the new academic year.

The latest improvements enhance GSAL’s capacity as an events venue, following on from the opening of a well-equipped and versatile conference suite earlier this year. Any profits from external lettings are donated to GSAL’s bursary fund, which provides means-tested financial support for children who could not otherwise attend the independent school.

Steve Kingston, GSAL’s director of finance and operations, said: “With GSAL’s 10th birthday approaching we felt the time was right to update some of the facilities that have served us well since the school was established.

“We’re committed to providing the best possible school experience for our students so we are investing in the high quality facilities they deserve. Likewise our staff will enjoy an enhanced working environment to support them in helping pupils make the most of their time at GSAL.”

The sixth form centre provides a space for GSAL’s most senior students to enjoy more independence in their school day. The whole space has been transformed with new furniture and a vibrant green and grey colour scheme, while the café area has been remodelled to streamline service at busy times. Study facilities are much improved with new individual study booths and upgraded computer facilities.

The main refectory has enjoyed a facelift, with the serving area redesigned, the whole room redecorated and new flooring laid. Catering facilities have been expanded into the theatre foyer, where there is a new coffee and juice bar. A new sound system in the area will enhance the many events and performances held there. The assembly hall has new seating and lighting and the whole space has been redecorated.
