Public Benefit
The Grammar School at Leeds is a registered charity whose aim is
the advancement of education and training for boys and girls
As a registered charity, we are obliged to ensure that our activities in support of this charitable aim are of benefit to the public. Full guidelines on the Charity Commission's definition of ‘public benefit' can be found here on their website
We provide benefits to the general public in the following ways:
We help to train and educate children from other schools
Our teachers have a wealth of expertise between them, and our school has some of the best facilities in the country. We share both through a huge variety of formal and informal relationships with other schools, organisations and individuals.
In Leeds, 500 -700 primary school pupils enter the GSAL Primary Maths Competition every year, while year 5 children from schools in Beeston, Gipton and Burmantofts become forensic detectives for the day in our Senior School chemistry labs. We also run sports tournaments for local primary and prep schools, many of whom don't have their own playing field. Our development work with a leading supplier of geographic information systems, ESRI UK Ltd, means that teachers from other schools can now benefit from state of the art technology with direct, relevant classroom applications - and we show them how to do it! Further afield, our ongoing links with schools and orphanages in Malawi means we are continually improving the lives and education of children in one of the most deprived areas in the world.

We provide financial help so that children from less wealthy homes can attend our school
We have a number of means-tested bursaries for parents who cannot afford our fees. These are currently available for new pupils joining us in Year 7 and the Lower Sixth, subject to our usual entrance selection procedures. Bursaries can cover the full fee or part of the fee. For details of how to apply for a bursary, please click here.
Bursaries are funded from a variety of sources. These include charitable trusts, private donations and legacies. Some of the more well known contributors to our bursary fund include former pupils such as golf professional Colin Montgomerie and entertainer Barry Cryer. For details of how to make a donation to our bursary fund, please contact the Development Manager Mrs Bronwen Ashton tel 0113 228 5139.
We also have a hardship fund which helps families who encounter financial difficulty during the course of their children's education here.
We educate our own pupils to a high standard
The Grammar School at Leeds provides an education to approximately 2,300 - 2,400 children between the ages of 3 and 18 each year. Examination success is extremely good. For example, our A Level students typically achieve a pass rate of 80% or more at grades A and B. This is despite the fact that, unlike some schools, we continue to tackle the more rigorous A Level subjects - physics, languages, maths etc - and we continue to allow students with weaker GCSE results to enter the Sixth Form and study the subjects of their choice, irrespective of the impact on the school's position in any league table. Almost all our pupils go on to study at university, most obtain places at their first choice university - including Oxford and Cambridge - and many study subjects which are of significant benefit to society at large, such as medicine and languages.
