Pupils, staff and governors at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) welcomed a special alumnus to school this morning, Councillor Ann Castle, Lord Mayor of Leeds.

Accompanied by the Lord Mayor’s Consort, her husband Graham Castle, Mrs Castle met representatives of the governing body, with Principal Mike Gibbons and Senior Deputy Head Chris Bamforth, who is also chair of the Old Girls’ Club.

Mr and Mrs Castle enjoyed a trip down memory lane, as they studied some magazines from the Leeds Girls’ High School archives featuring their daughter, before taking a guided tour of Senior School with Head Boy James Roberts and Head Girl Charlotte Martin.

The visit concluded in Junior School, where Mr and Mrs Castle looked in on maths, English and science lessons, the art room, library and food technology room.

Mrs Castle attended Leeds Girls’ High School and feels that the schooling she experienced there has helped in her current role. She said: “We were encouraged to stand up straight, speak slowly and distinctly and grow in confidence.”

Although Mrs Castle and her consort, husband Graham Castle, have attended events at GSAL, this was the first time they had taken the full tour. Mrs Castle said: “I am very pleased to be here today and see what the changes have meant to the school. Naturally I felt some sadness when the high school moved from the site where I spent my own school days, however the current pupils have really sold it to me this morning.”
