The head boys and head girls have been named who will represent the student body at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) during the next academic year.

The lower sixth quartet of Abhijeet Oswal, Frances Pye, Libby Munro and Matthew Vautrey were appointed through a demanding selection process. After securing nomination, they had to produce a manifesto and win the votes of staff and fellow sixth form students, before a final interview with members of the senior management team.

They will be stepping into their new roles later this term after their AS-levels. Their responsibilities will include representing the school on formal occasions, liaising on behalf of fellow students with senior staff, building links between Senior School and younger age groups and coordinating student volunteers for open days and tours.

Libby has been at the school since nursery. She said: “I’m looking forward to taking up the role, which I see as an opportunity to represent the school to the outside world and act as a role model for the younger year groups.”

Frances said: “School’s given me a lot and made me the person I am, and I want to give something back. My aim is to create more interactivity between the years and to be approachable for younger pupils.”

Abhijeet had a very particular reason for aspiring to the role of head boy. He said: “I’ve wanted to be head boy since my brother Abhishek held the position when I was in year 8. Seeing what he did and how he enjoyed the role meant I wanted to achieve it too.”

Aspiring lawyer Matthew believes that his involvement in debating and the Model United Nations has built his confidence to take on the role. He said: “At the MUN event in Hamburg I had to speak in a room of 200 people on a topic we hadn’t had much time to prepare. Being thrown in at the deep end like that is good preparation for public speaking at occasions like Speech Day.”
