For the first time ever The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) has played at the national finals of the England Hockey National Schools Championships for Girls – with teams in two of the three age categories.

England’s top eight teams in each age group are selected through a series of county and regional rounds to reach the national finals. To secure a top eight finish and their places in the final, GSAL’s under 14 and under 16 teams had to win play-off matches following the north regional round.

This meant the teams had already gone one better than last year, when three of GSAL’s teams reached the top 24 (the northern regional round) for their age group in the country, and is further evidence of the way hockey is progressing year on year at the school.

At the finals between 25 and 27 February 2014 at Cannock Hockey Club, the under 16s (pictured) fared better than the under 13s by winning two out of three pool matches to progress from the group stages, eventually finishing in fourth place overall.

Representing GSAL at the finals was a milestone for the players, who have written their way into the school record books simply by being there. They can also take pride in the knowledge that they play for one of the top eight school hockey teams in England, with the under 16s enjoying the accolade of fourth in the country.

Teacher Pam Hardaker, who coaches the under 16 team, said: “The girls are very committed, putting in a lot of extra practice. With many also playing outside school regularly at club level they are very supportive of one another, helping to bring on their team mates who are less accustomed to such competitive match play.”
