A budding artist and bookworm from Menston Primary School has won the top prize in a design competition run by the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) at the Ilkley Literature Festival.
Nine year old Jack Hemsley entered GSAL’s Design a Book competition when he attended events at the Children’s Festival of Ilkley Literature Festival. GSAL is the main sponsor of the Children’s Festival, which is a key part of the main festival fortnight with over 30 events for young people.
Jack, who loves to draw, picked up some top tips at the Children’s Festival, from Tony Saulles who illustrates the Horrible Science series and the creator of the Wimpy Kid series Jeff Kinney who appeared on video link while the audience had a go at creating their own cartoons.
To enter the competition children had to recreate their favourite book cover and Jack was inspired by Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants series as he has read all the books. According to his mum Jack usually has three books on the go at once and he said: “I’m very happy to have won the kindle because I read lots and now I can just buy books online and read them anywhere.”
GSAL Senior Deputy Head Mrs Chris Bamforth congratulated Jack as she presented the prize at Menston Primary School’s celebration assembly. She said: “You were chosen from lots of very good entries. Your design stood out because of the attention to detail and the brilliant colours.”
