A team of sixth form mathematicians from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) has taken first prize for the second year running in the poster competition at the United Kingdom Mathematical Trust (UKMT) Senior Team Maths Challenge final.
Held at the Camden Centre, London, the competition tests mathematical, communication and teamwork skills, through the poster competition and maths challenge. The GSAL team of Vandan Parmar, Trina Seal, Ashwin Venkatesh and Marcus Roberts continued the school’s run of success with their winning poster design on the topic Ruled Surfaces.
The team also had to answer mathematical questions on the theme, which required a very high level understanding of the subject, and saw them placed 11th overall, GSAL’s highest ever placement.
Orla Fitzsimons, head of the faculty of mathematics at GSAL, said: “We are very proud of the team, not least because they have been incredibly self-motivated and given up a significant amount of their time preparing for both the regional and national rounds on the way. We have improved our performance in this highly prestigious competition year on year – going from 33rd to 28th to 18th, and now to 11th.”
