Six step up to new student leadership team

There’s a new look to the student leadership team for next year – with six fresh faces at the helm instead of the traditional team of four.

Current lower sixth students (pictured L-R) Mary-Anne Sixsmith, Tom Gorman, Pippa Caine, James Micklethwaite, Becky Hutson and Ashwin Venkatesh are preparing to take over as head boys and girls before their predecessors depart on study leave.

They were the six candidates left standing after a rigorous selection process last term during which they had to earn nomination, write a manifesto, appeal to the electorate – in this instance fellow students and staff – and prove their calibre to senior management team members at a final interview.

The appointment of six students, instead of four, is a one year pilot with a view to exploring new opportunities for the team, within school and as ambassadors for GSAL in the local community.

Tom said: “It’s a privilege to represent your year group and the school as a whole, and we’re looking forward to developing the roles as individuals.”

Becky said: “With six on the team we can increase what we take on and play a bigger role in the life of the school, especially getting more involved with Rose Court and Junior School.”

Mary-Anne previously held office on the Leeds Youth Council for a year and says she gained a lot from the experience.

She said: “I’ve learned what it takes to represent your peers, work as a team member, listen to others and take constructive advice. Above all, we will seek to make sure we are genuinely representative of the student body whether it’s friendly interaction with fellow pupils or assisting at formal events.”
