A new home for Rose Court

Plans are under discussion to move Rose Court from Headingley to Alwoodley Gates, the main campus of The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) with effect from September 2020.

The vision for GSAL shared by our Principal, Mrs Sue Woodroofe, and the GSAL Board of Governors is to provide an outstanding education from nursery to sixth form, with all pupils on a single site as part of a whole school community.

Bringing Rose Court pupils and staff to Alwoodley will create a unified primary phase whilst ensuring the very youngest children enjoy an educational environment specially designed for their needs, and ease the transition for pupils between the different learning phases. Pupils of all ages will have access to the superb facilities that our purpose-built campus has to offer.

Our proposal

We would like to see Rose Court, Headingley, in use by another education provider, and to develop new accommodation at our Alwoodley Gates site for pupils in nursery to Year 2.

Regarding the future of the Rose Court site, we are in advanced discussions with a multi-academy trust (MAT). The MAT has developed an exciting and innovative plan for a free school, and will submit a free school application in the next round of bids, expected to be in spring 2018. Their proposal would create valuable school places to meet the needs of families in the Headingley area, and across the city.

To accommodate the Rose Court children we need planning permission for two separate developments at Alwoodley Gates. We have already secured permission from Leeds City Council for adaptations to the junior and senior school buildings, which will provide classrooms for pupils in Years 1 and 2.

We have also drawn up plans for a new nursery and reception building at Alwoodley Gates. In consultation with Leeds City Council, we have decided to align the submission of the planning application with the free school application for Rose Court. If both applications are successful we would aim to relocate Rose Court to Alwoodley Gates during the summer of 2020, ready for the new term in September 2020.
