A new home for Rose Court

Plans are under discussion to move Rose Court from Headingley to Alwoodley Gates, the main campus of The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) with effect from September 2019.

The vision for GSAL shared by our Principal, Mrs Sue Woodroofe, and the GSAL Board of Governors is to provide an outstanding education from nursery to sixth form, with all pupils on a single site as part of a whole school community.

Bringing Rose Court pupils and staff to Alwoodley will create a unified primary phase whilst ensuring the very youngest children enjoy an educational environment specially designed for their needs, and ease the transition for pupils between the different learning phases. Pupils of all ages will have access to the superb facilities that our purpose-built campus has to offer.

Our proposal

The next stage in this proposal is to secure planning permission to build at Alwoodley Gates, with the planning application due for submission in February 2017. The proposal includes a dedicated new building for nursery and reception pupils. Year 1 and Year 2 pupils will be accommodated in the Junior School building, which will be reconfigured accordingly. The alterations to Junior School will include an extension into the adjoining area of Senior School to house Year 6, to be accessed by a new elevated covered walkway.

We will make every effort to ensure that the transition work and relocation can proceed as smoothly as possible for all involved. The timeframe allows an emphasis on minimising disruption at Alwoodley and ensuring continuity of provision for pupils at the current Rose Court.

We have explored future options for the existing Rose Court building, in close consultation with Leeds City Council. Our intention is that it will remain in use as a school to benefit local children. The most likely route to secure its future as a school is through the government’s free school initiative.
