The road to Rio is a reality for three alumni of The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), who will compete at the 2016 Olympic Games for three different nations in three different disciplines.

Gordon Benson (GSAL 2012) is one third of the Team GB men’s triathlon squad alongside Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee. The three train together at the Leeds Triathlon Centre, which has produced five of the six triathletes selected for Rio. Gordon is a European triathlon champion having taken gold at last year’s European Games in Baku, and 2016 is turning out to be another landmark year for him – not only has he achieved selection for the Olympics, he has also graduated from the University of Leeds with a degree in nutrition.

Also enjoying a double celebration this year – graduating from Leeds Beckett University with a 2:1 in sport and exercise science and earning selection for the Olympics – is diver Yona Knight-Wisdom, who was one year below Gordon at GSAL. Yona will make history in Rio as the first Jamaican male ever to compete in the diving competition at the Olympics. Although representing Jamaica, Yona still calls Leeds home and he trains alongside the Team GB divers at Leeds Diving Club.

Badminton player Robin Middleton, who left Leeds Grammar School in 2003, completes our trio for Rio. Rob moved permanently to Australia in 2012, having initially headed down under to travel for a few months. During his travels he was invited to train with the Australian national squad and went on to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games. For the past two years he has played mixed doubles with Leanne Choo and the two have already won several international titles.
