Student-run company Stream, based at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), was in full flow at this year’s Leeds Enterprise Advisory Programme (LEAP) awards with wins in eight categories.

The ten lower sixth students who make up the Stream team even scooped the top prize of Best Overall LEAP Company, fighting off strong competition from another GSAL company Drincup, in an award described by LEAP as “one of the closest decisions the judges have ever had to make”.

LEAP enables students to set up their own companies for a school year, learning business skills, teamwork and problem solving whilst gaining confidence and employability skills. At the end of the year teams present their company and its results to a panel of business advisers and prepare their annual report and accounts.

All profits are donated to charity, and the Stream team will shortly be handing a cheque for £878 to St Gemma’s Hospice.

Flo Straughan was the managing director of Stream and describes LEAP as a very rewarding experience. She said:It was a challenge but we learned lots of valuable skills, and take a great deal of pride from setting up our business and making a profit. We pulled together really well as a team and used everyone’s skills to the best purpose.”

Another of Stream’s awards was for their use of social media, to promote their range of sports drink bottles, printed with quotes, and sold with colour-coordinated earphones.

Rachel Marks, Stream’s social media director, said: “Although I didn’t have much background in social media it was a great opportunity to develop new skills and connect with people who could help us raise our profile. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram were really important platforms for us to raise awareness of our brand, events and special promotions.”

GSAL team Drincup, which sold a range of mugs, gift wrapped and containing foodie treats, won the award for Most Improved Use of Social Media. In keeping with LEAP’s aim of preparing students for the world of work, the prizes for both social media awards include valuable work experience with LEAP sponsor, Leeds-based communications agency Clearsilver Brand Marketing.

Congratulations to all the members of Stream – Flo Straughan, Rachel Marks, Noah Lewis, Will Piper, Gemma Timmons, Arielle Kaufman, Tilly Woodward, Maya Bhakta, Tess Fawkes and Antony Attia. Stream won awards for Best overall LEAP company; Best company report; Best presentation; Best media awareness; Social media award; Joint winner best administered company; Best trade stand at Valentine Trade Fair; Joint runner up for best marketing.

Congratulations also to members of Drincup – Felicity Greenfield, Ellie Gratton, Carody Vyse-Peacock, Harriet Grubb, Emma Handley, Yiming Xie and Sundus Masudi. Drincup won awards for Best website; Most improved social media; Best marketing at trade fairs; December trade fair best marketing; Best administered company (joint with Stream); Runner-up for best presentation.
