Suzy selected for World League Finals

Monday 12 February 2018

Hockey player Suzy Petty (GSAL10) has competed in the World League Finals in New Zealand in her first major senior tournament as part of the England squad.

And the selection takes her a step closing to fulfilling her dream of playing in this year’s Commonwealth Games in April.

She said: “It was an absolute honour to get selected for my first senior tournament, especially for one where the top eight teams in the world were competing.”

The England team, who are ranked second in the world, had a successful tournament in New Zealand, making it through to the semi-finals and bronze medal play-off.

They lost out in the semis when New Zealand scored a late winner to beat England 1-0, before losing 1-0 to South Korea in the bronze medal match.

Suzy said: “It was a great way to try and get my foot in the door before a big year ahead in 2018, where we have the Commonwealth Games in April and a home World Cup in July. It’s back to a hard few months of training now to do all I can to get myself selected for these two tournaments.”

She currently plays for Wimbledon and is a full-time hockey athlete, receiving her first senior cap in November 2013. Suzy has also played for the U21s for three years, captaining the team at the World Cup and winning bronze at the U21 European championships.

She also won bronze at the Youth Olympics in Australia.
