Brief synopsis of workshop:

We will discuss our 4 year journey from being a school languishing at the bottom of all league tables to a thriving school which was recently judged as good by Ofsted, achieved above average P8 and has been significantly over-subscribed for 4 years running. We will talk about how we changed the psychology of the organisation and the creation of a culture of ‘deliberate practice’ as a framework for eliciting improvements in teaching and ensuring that good practice is identified, celebrated and utilised to support whole school improvement.


What you will get out of it:

Some practical strategies to facilitate whole school improvement and change the psychology of an organisation. Delegates will also get an overview of a strategy which has enabled a school to adopt a culture of deliberate practice around teaching and learning

Profile of facilitator:

Andrew Moorcroft is the Principal & Executive Lead for School Improvement within The Challenge Academy Trust. Andrew has worked in ‘challenging’ schools for 20 years; he has worked as a senior leader for 10 years and for the last 5 years he has been Principal at Beamont Collegiate Academy in a deprived area of Warrington in Cheshire.

When Andrew took the reins at BCA, the school was facing significant challenges including high exclusions, low attendance, poor reputation and results and was struggling to attract staff and students. After 4 years, the academy is now the most over-subscribed school in Warrington with attendance above national average for all groups, exclusions amongst the lowest in the area and improved GCSE results across the board.

Andrew has recently been part of a team who have formed a unique multi-academy trust which includes primaries, secondaries (including a faith school) and a 6th form college. Andrew now leads school improvement across the trust.

Adam McMillan is the Vice Principal i/c teaching, learning & assessment at Beamont Collegiate Academy. Adam has been a teacher of Humanities for 15 years on both sides of the Pennines and during that time held several Middle leadership roles before becoming leader of the Humanities faculty. Adam went on to become senior Leader with responsibility for teaching, learning and assessment at the outset of the journey of school improvement at BCA. Adam has supported driving whole school improvements in teaching and learning at the academy and was designated a Specialist Leader of Education in 2015. Adam has recently been appointed Associate Vice Principal at BCA.
