Hamish Macdonald (OL07) is finishing his rugby career on a high with a remarkable three blues to his name.

Hamish, a member of Oxford’s varsity squad, is retiring from the game due to recurrent injuries but leaves with lasting memories of his time on the pitch, both at university and at Leeds Grammar School.

He has played in four varsity matches – winning all four – as well as making nine appearances at Twickenham and playing four times against international teams, Portugal, Georgia and Russia.

Hamish, who was captain of the LGS 1st team, is currently finishing a medical degree at Wadham College. Having completed his finals, he spent his elective in Cape Town in A&E and trauma, then travelled to Sydney for paediatric orthopaedics. He is due to start work in Taunton in August.

Away from Oxford Hamish is a keen sailor, including as an amateur for professional teams and has won a number of national championships along the way.

Looking back on his rugby career, he said: “Despite the injuries, my time at OURFC has been incredible and although I’m giving up rugby, I should still have enough time to keep sailing at a high level.”
