A fond farewell for GSAL’s Jane Marsh

Wednesday 13 January 2021

The Grammar School at Leeds staff formed a guard of honour to bid a fitting and fond farewell to much-loved and admired member of their estates team, Jane Marsh, who is retiring after 23 years of service.

The Grammar School at Leeds, and Leeds Grammar School before it, have played a significant part in Jane’s life.

Jane’s late husband, John, was Deputy Head Porter at Leeds Grammar School and together they lived on site near the former sports hall on Woodsley Road. As a registered child minder, Jane ran a crèche for visiting parents during school open events, before becoming a teaching assistant in pre-prep when the school moved to its current site at Alwoodley Gates. Jane joined the estates team soon after, becoming a team leader when Leeds Girls’ High School and Leeds Grammar School merged in 2008.

However, Jane’s early life is also linked with the school. Jane’s grandparents worked for Canon Reeves, vicar of Leeds and former chair of governors of Leeds Grammar School, which led to Jane being christened by him.

Jane has followed her pre-prep class of boys with interest as they have grown and developed through the school. They too are very fond of her and last year made sure to have a photograph with her before they headed off to university.

Jane is a much-loved and highly respected member of the GSAL. She is very proud of the estates team who contribute so much professionalism and practicality to school life. After a challenging and unique final year of service, keeping the school community safe during the pandemic, Jane is looking forward to a well-deserved retirement spending time with her grandson, travelling again and continuing with her hobby of building dolls’ houses.
