The coming 12 months will make way for a wide range of birthday celebrations recognising this milestone anniversary for The Grammar School at Leeds and also honouring the two schools from which we grow and in which we are rooted.
We owe much to the heritage of Leeds Grammar School and Leeds Girls’ High School and all three schools will feature in our celebrations. This year will see a calendar of cultural and sporting events running alongside get-togethers of students, staff, alumni, parents and friends.
There really will be something for everyone and we hope that you will take the opportunity to join together with our school community to celebrate with us this year.
Please continue to read on for further information on specific events and initiatives and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for regular updates.
I hope you will enjoy being part of our celebrations just as we enjoy being part of this great school.
The birthday briefings is a lunchtime lecture series running March to June with speakers drawn from across our diverse alumni and business community. The lectures usually relate to one of our many extra-curricular societies and take place in the senior school on a Friday lunchtime from 1.15-2pm. They are free and open to all students, alumni, parents and friends of the school.
In our 10th birthday year The Grammar School at Leeds are proud to launch the Leeds Luminaries Awards to honour high-achieving alumni of Leeds Grammar School, Leeds Girls’ High School and The Grammar School at Leeds. We will be recognising alumni whose achievements in their chosen field inspire others to succeed and whose personal successes embody the school’s core values of excellence, inspiration and citizenship. View the list of nominees (voting has now closed). The winners will be announced at a special gala dinner on Saturday 17 November.
To mark our 10th birthday we are a celebrating our philanthropic roots. The idea of philanthropy and helping young people achieve success led to the creation of both Leeds Grammar School and Leeds Girls’ High School. This philosophy continues today at GSAL and is the cornerstone of our Birthday Bursary Campaign.
We aim to celebrate the union of the schools by bringing together our alumni community and friends of the school in support of 10 new bursaries – one for every year of GSAL.
Whilst we spend over £1.4m per year supporting nearly 200 children, demand for bursaries has never been greater.
We strongly believe that no pupil who is academically talented should be prevented from joining the school through lack of means. Our long term aspiration is to remove any financial barrier to a Grammar School at Leeds education and in 2018 we aim to start this journey by creating 10 Birthday Bursaries, one for every year of GSAL.
