Biology Teachers’ Article Published in Science Journal

Thursday 16 December 2010

Biology teachers Dr Lynne Gilbert and Mrs Lucy Brown from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL)

have written an article entitled, ‘Teaching Biodiversity : A Successful Approach’ which has been published in the School Science Review. This is a highly regarded, peer reviewed periodical, which is sent to all secondary members of the Association of Science Education (ASE) on a quarterly basis. It is also sent to university libraries and education centres and is read worldwide.

The article concerns the GSAL Y8 Biology course unit Variety of Life which aims to unpick the idea of biodiversity and consider some of its many facets.  This is an unusual topic to teach to Y8 students and the publication of the article reflects the interest shown in the school’s attempt to focus on different areas of contemporary, real world science at this level.

To have an article published in such a prestigious journal during the International Year of Biodiversity is a real achievement and reflects the uniqueness of this particular piece of curriculum development at GSAL.
