Emily turns her love of the movies into a romantic novel

Thursday 19 January 2017

TV journalist Emily Kerr (OG04) is celebrating the publication of her first novel, a romantic comedy set in Yorkshire with a Hollywood twist.

The debut book, Who Does He Think He is? has been published by Crooked Cat Books in both paperback and e-book after being  named runner-up in the Festival of Romance New Talent Award.

Emily, who studied classics at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, before completing a postgraduate degree in broadcast journalism at Leeds Trinity, now works as an assistant content editor at ITV Calendar News.

The inspiration for the novel came from her love of film and her daily glimpses into the world of television drama.

She said: “I love the movies and have always been fascinated by what goes into creating the magic. Our newsroom at ITV Calendar News shares its home with the Emmerdale studios. This means that I am lucky enough to get tantalising glimpses of the weird and wonderful world of television drama production.

“I never quite know what I’ll encounter when I pop into the canteen for a sandwich. One day I’ll be queuing by the coffee machine behind a woman in a wedding dress, and the next I’ll be waiting at the vending machine as two police officers and a man with a head wound chat about the weather!”

In her book, Lady Aurelia Osbourne-Lloyd is left in charge of the family stately home where she’s trying (and failing) to turn the family fortunes around by welcoming tourists to the house. However when a Hollywood production company chooses the estate as a location for a Regency movie, a whole new level of chaos enters Aurelia’s life, especially as it seems the leading man may have an ulterior motive for wanting to get close to her.
