Empowered women aim to empower others as GSAL launches Women in Leadership

Wednesday 13 May 2020

Fifty of the school’s top ‘old girls’ have joined forces with GSAL to pioneer a new career networking hub, Women in Leadership (WiL), which is designed to improve gender diversity in the workplace.

From cutting edge medics to fast growth businesswomen, environment pioneers to creative gurus, the 50 women have smashed through glass ceilings all over the country from their roots as schoolgirls at LGHS and GSAL.

These ambassadors will inspire the next generation of leaders from GSAL by visiting school for talks, hosting informal lunches for one-to-one chats and facilitating work experience for both existing students and alumnae.

The launch of the initiative was hosted by Nicola Elliott (OG93), founder of NEOM Organics, at her Leeds-based store in Victoria Gate.

Fiona Ross, head of development at GSAL, said: “The connectivity and support at the event was palpable as some of our most successful alumnae shared their experiences with some of our younger alumnae and sixth formers. And this is just the start. We have lots planned to help inspire, support and make a difference.”

As well as Nicola Elliott, the first of the 50 ambassadors to be signed up, WiL members include Katie White (OG99), climate campaigner; Nicolette Jones (OG77), children’s author, journalist and The Sunday Times children’s book reviewer; Ellissa Baskind (OG96), consultant gynaecologist and sub-specialist in reproductive medicine; Zoe Hudson (OG84), leading sports physiotherapist and polar explorer; and Kathryn Cearns (OG82), chartered accountant, now a self-employed consultant specialising in advising and writing on financial reporting, auditing, company law and corporate governance.
