To mark the end of the First World War and to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the conflict, GSAL is organising a tour of the historic battlefield sites with school archivist John Davies.
The four-night excursion, from Thursday 26 to Monday 30 September, will take in visits to the battlefields of Ypres Salient and the Somme and can also include personal visits to WW1 cemeteries.
John, a keen WW1 historian and author of A High Ideal: Leeds Grammar School and the Great War, will be the tour guide throughout the visit. Many OLs will remember him as a former teacher of history at LGS and former head of Junior School.
The itinerary Includes:
Day 1: Leave Leeds at 3pm to travel to Hull for overnight ferry to Zeebrugge
Day 2: Tour of Ypres Salient with visits to Vancouver Corner; Langemarck German Cemetery; Tyne Cot Cemetery; and the Zonnebeke Passchendaele Museum. The day will end with the last post ceremony at the Menin Gate. Overnight stay at the Hotel Regina in Ypres or Novotel in Ypres, with dinner in the hotel.
Day 3: Travel to the Somme with stops at Fromelles and the new Australian Visitors Centre and Cemetery. A tour of the Somme battlefield will include Lochnagar Mine; Thiepval Memorial; Delville Wood; Pozieres; and Newfoundland Park. Overnight stay at Hotel Le Prieure, Rancourt or Hotel Mercure, Assevillers with dinner at the hotel
Day 4: Visit to Serre before travelling to Vimy Ridge en route for Zeebrugge and overnight ferry.
Day 5: Return to Leeds, arriving at 10.30am.
The tour is open to alumni, current students, parents, staff and friends. An extra night can be included to allow more time at the Somme or personal visits to sites or cemeteries.
The cost is £600 per person based on two people sharing a cabin on the ferry and a room in the hotels. Single supplements will apply.
