Junior library opens ahead of a new chapter for GSAL

Monday 9 September 2019

A new junior library opened this term at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), as the school looks forward to a new chapter in its history.

In September 2020, the new GSAL Primary School will come into existence following the relocation of Rose Court Nursery and Pre-prep from Headingley to Alwoodley Gates. To free up accommodation for the younger pupils, the library in Junior School has moved to a big, bright and airy space on the first floor.

As the first pupils to have a library lesson this term, Class 5R attended the official opening of the new library with their teacher Miss Rennoldson. Mrs Solti, Vice Principal and Head of Primary School, cut the ribbon, alongside GSAL Principal Mrs Woodroofe and members of the library and estates teams.

Mrs Solti said: “Look at this beautiful space and all the different books we have. Whatever you love, there’s a book here for you and we know that reading a lot will help you do well and improve your learning.”

The pupils enjoyed special book shaped biscuits baked by the catering team and explored the new library. According to Jessica “It’s brilliant!” while Diseye said: “All the fiction is sorted out ABC so it’s easy to find things and there are lots of new books.”

The library has more than 12,000 books and it took 200 big crates to move them! The opening ceremony was an opportunity to thank the estates team for their hard work getting the library ready for the new term.

The library move was just one of the projects that took place during the summer holidays in preparation for the Rose Court relocation in September 2020. Visitors to school now pass under a new elevated glass walkway in the porte cochère which will link the primary school building with the senior school classrooms.

Ground floor classrooms in Junior School have new French doors to connect them to outdoor play space. One classroom has been completely refurbished to the required specification of the new nursery provision and will be used as a ‘show classroom’ to give visitors a taste of the new early years learning environment.
