North Independent Secondary School of the Year 2020

Pastoral care

Caring for every child

Making your child feel valued, included and secure is a core principal to everything we do in Junior School. The pastoral team is led by one of our Assistant Heads, who works closely with the Heads of Year and form tutors.

Class teachers know and care for every child in their group and they are the first point of contact for parents to answer questions and discuss any issues.

The House system

Each pupil belongs to one of four Houses, which gives them the opportunity to meet and interact with pupils in other Year groups. Everyone gets to ‘have a go’; regardless of ability, and Year 6 pupils learn how to lead and motivate.

Medical support

The school has three fully-qualified nurses (shared across the whole school) who provide assistance throughout the day. There is a designated medical room in Junior school itself and many of our staff are trained in basic first aid, with a number having additional qualifications.

GSAL is a resolutely multi-faith school, with some assemblies for the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and Hindu faiths. Our experience is that when pupils openly celebrate and discuss their different beliefs, they find it much easier to be tolerant and understanding of others. There are common themes which run through all religions and encourage good citizenship which is one of GSAL’s educational aims. We have a school chaplin who oversees faith throughout the whole school and we have excellent relationships with local clergy who regularly attend assemblies.

Healthy for Life

We all appreciate that a healthy mind and a healthy body go hand in hand and this is something we strive for in every facet of school life. Our refectory serves a healthy choice of meals, with hot and cold options including a help yourself salad bar as well as fresh fruit and desserts. Our curriculum includes one afternoon of sport per week, as well as a single lesson of PE in addition to cycling proficiency training in Year 5 and outdoor skills in Year 6.
