Pupils at Rose Court Nursery and Pre-Prep have consumed a week’s diet of science with a little help from Leeds and Bradford based food manufacturer Symington’s.

For their food-themed science week, the three to seven year old pupils at Rose Court became scientists and inventors for the week to create new and exciting foods and drinks using science.

Nursery children came up with amazing mashed potato recipes, Reception set to with jelly ingredients, Year 1 tore up the tea bag and Year 2 resized the scone by varying raising agents.

Symington’s assistant brand managers Nicola Bates and Sunita Hart talked with the children about how the firm’s food scientists use their specialist knowledge to create new products. They then put the children’s taste buds to the test by asking them to guess the flavours of some of their ‘Mug Shot’ snacks.

Nicola said: “As a local food manufacturer, community activities like this are a great opportunity to raise awareness among young people of how the science they learn at school is relevant to food production. The children have been fantastic, shown great enthusiasm and are very inquisitive. They are keen to tell us about the projects they have been doing this week, and we hope we have got them thinking about their food, what they are eating and where it comes from.”

Teacher Steve McKinley, who is science coordinator for Rose Court, said: “Symington’s is an ideal local link for us, to show the children food innovation on their doorstep. The company’s visit has shown the children how science is important in food and that familiar brands are made just around the corner.

“For science week we have chosen topics to fit with the curriculum of each year group. Pupils have engaged enthusiastically throughout and gained a real sense of how science relates to them every day.”
