Oxbridge experience on offer for GSAL eleven

Friday 27 January 2017

An impressive 11 current and former students from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) have their sights set on the ‘dreaming spires’ after receiving offers from Oxbridge colleges.

From the current upper sixth, nine students are holding conditional offers to study at Oxford or Cambridge, together with two former students who achieved three straight A* grades in last year’s A-levels.

Subject to their A-level grades this summer, two students will be reading PPE at the University of Oxford – Rachel Marks at Worcester College and Gemma Timmons at Magdalen College. Also holding conditional offers for Oxford are Disha Anand, to read law with French law at Brasenose College and James Dahlgreen to read geology at Worcester College.

In addition two students who left in 2016 have places at St Edmund Hall in Oxford, Abhijeet Oswal to read economics and management and Tim Robinson to read biochemistry.

Five current upper sixth students have conditional offers from Cambridge colleges. They are Emily Boggs, for medicine at Jesus College, Caitlin Buckley for psychology and behavioural sciences at Gonville and Caius, Ellie Burgin for English at Newnham College, Fahd Omar for economics at St John’s College and Katie-Lou White for natural sciences at Emmanuel College.

GSAL provides a comprehensive programme of support for students in sixth form as they apply for university. There is a dedicated Oxbridge coordinator to provide specialist advice and help on aspects of the process such as personal statements, interview preparation and admissions tests.

Aspiring medic Emily Boggs said: “The academic and pastoral support from school made such a difference. The Cambridge application process was a challenge but one I enjoyed, especially meeting people and staying in college for the interviews. While the goal of being a medic is ultimately what’s important to me, Cambridge will be a lovely way to do it!”
