Remembering Mr Fry

Tuesday 14 April 2020

It was two years ago on 12 April 2018 that sadly Derek Fry, much-loved teacher of physics and astronomy at The Grammar School at Leeds, passed away. We continue to remember him and seek guidance in his sound advice and wise words. We wonder what he would have made of the current situation?

Last year we launched Mr Fry’s Collection, a freely available digital archive, with the aim that he can continue to inspire and enthuse all those with an interest in astronomy. We continue to add materials to the archive collection and we are delighted that students and educators have been accessing it from all over the country.  However, Mr Fry would help anyone who needed it. On closer inspection of the Miscellaneous section of his archive (To all aspiring university students in particular) it appears there is sound advice for us all.

Mr Fry had many roles for which he is remembered for in school. As we enter the summer term we are reminded of Derek’s role on Sports Day when he meticulously recorded the results of each and every event. Here is Mr Fry with Mrs Williams and his dog, Charlie on Sports Day in 1991.
