Promising young table tennis player Shayan Siraj will represent Yorkshire at the national finals of the Butterfly Schools’ Individual Table Tennis Championships.
The nine-year-old, who is a pupil at the Junior School of The Grammar School at Leeds, will join more than 300 players representing 50 counties for the event at The Dome in Doncaster on Saturday, April 16. It is the largest one day event in the table tennis calendar in England.
Shayan, who will compete at U11 level, said: “Although I am still only nine, I won the U11 competition to become the Yorkshire champion. I have been playing table tennis for two and a half years now and I am a member of Moor Allerton Table Tennis Club.”
Following the national championships, Shayan is hoping to be in the running when the English Schools’ Table Tennis Association selects representative teams to play in the Invitation International in Ireland in June, competing against teams from Guernsey, Scotland, Isle of Man, Wales and Ireland.
