The Junior School at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) has transformed into ‘The Incredible Institute of Inventors’ and launched an exciting programme of activities for National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW).
The theme for NSEW 2013 is ‘Invention and discovery’. The pupils enlisted the help of some silver scientists – their grandparents – to find out how technology has changed lives through the generations.
This initiative is part of a fun-packed schedule of science which has earned the school nomination for an NSEW Event Award in the ‘Best primary school event’ category, one of just three schools in the UK to make the shortlist. The NSEW Event Award judges are due to visit during the week to see how the young scientists are shaping up before making their decision.
Each day a different year group is inviting their grandparents into class and Year 6 was the first. The pupils showed off some of the IT skills they use daily in the computer rooms and in return their grandparents told the youngsters about the inventions that had come along during their lifetimes.
Howard Armstrong, visiting grandson Charlie, said: “I’ve learnt from the children and they from me. I have tried to give them a perception of what has happened in the last 60 years.”
Junior School science leader Mrs Gwen Lindsey devised the programme of events for NSEW. She said: “We hope the children will be excited and enthused by the different activities, and realise that they can learn from previous generations and help one another.”
