Students Set Up Company To Aid Malawi Youngsters

Thursday 17 February 2011

A team of enterprising GSAL students has set up a company to sell a range of bath products in aid of youngsters in Malawi.

The L6 students hope to raise £1500 to help two Malawian projects – the Open Arms Orphanage and Mary’s Meals, a charity which provides a free lunch to all children attending school.

Six of the eight students who set up the company Treat Me Sweet, under the Leeds Enterprise Advisory Programme (LEAP), will take the proceeds to Malawi when they visit the country with school for three weeks in the summer.

The students, Francesca Whalen, Callum Kenny, Jordan Bickerdyke, Sophia McDougall, Sophie Stone, Emma Anderson, Isabella Buono, and Lizzie Tomkins, have been selling soaps, bath bombs and candles in school and at LEAP trade fairs.  They also approached a number of businesses and organisations and have sold their products at several gift fairs including at Harewood House and in York, plus in Sant’ Angelo restaurant in Wetherby.

Francesca Whalen, who is the company’s managing director, said: “It is really important to us as a company that all our merchandise is natural and that our business is sustainable.  We source everything from the UK and make sure that none of our products has been tested on animals and that our packaging is recyclable.”

The company continually updates its range to tie in with key buying periods, offering novelty candles for Christmas, heart-shaped soaps for St Valentine’s Day and a selection of scented soaps and bath bombs aimed at Mother’s Day.
