Ten on track for top two with Oxbridge offers

Friday 24 January 2020

Ten Year 13 students from The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) are a huge step closer to attending the top two UK universities after receiving offers from Oxford or Cambridge colleges.

From languages to law, a diverse range of degree courses await the offer holders following their successful interviews last December. They will be able to take up their places in September as long as they achieve the required grades in their A-level exams this summer.

Two students have offers to study at the University of Oxford; Alex Kahn to read German at Wadham College and Zac Tobias for physics at New College.

The remaining eight candidates hold conditional offers from the University of Cambridge. Two aspiring lawyers, Josh Grier and Sam Pearce, have offers to read law at St John’s College and Churchill College respectively.

Also heading for Churchill College is Ben Paddy who holds an offer to read veterinary science. Megan Hodge has her sights set on a career in medicine, with an offer from Queens’ College, while Arnav Kotwal has a place at Emmanuel College to read maths.

Continuing their studies in the arts and humanities, Rui Nogueira plans to read history at Christ’s College and Jess Graham Spanish and German at Magdalene College. Multi-instrumentalist Karen Rodriguez Boidi, who plays piano, violin and saxophone, has an offer from St Catharine’s College to read music.

Sam Pearce said: “The interview gave me a good flavour of the Cambridge experience. It was interesting to have a conversation with real experts in their field, and take part in a mock courtroom scenario.

“The support in school such as the mock interviews helped me to feel prepared, and any of the sixth form staff were happy to help during the application process.”

GSAL’s higher education team offers individual support to sixth form students throughout the university application process, including specialist advice and preparation for those considering Oxbridge or competitive courses such as medicine and dentistry.
