We are North Independent Secondary School of the Year

Friday 22 November 2019

The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) has been named The Sunday Times North Independent Secondary School of the Year.

The Parent Power Schools Guide, which will be published in The Sunday Times this weekend, identifies the highest achieving 2,000 schools in the UK, based on recent examination results. From these schools, the guide selects regional schools of the year in the state and independent sectors.

Parent Power editor Alastair McCall said: “Eleven years on from the coming together at Alwoodley of the former Leeds Grammar School and Leeds Girls’ High, The Grammar School at Leeds is a thriving, dynamic place of learning. Its examination results this year were excellent with more than half of all A-level results returning A* or A grades.

“High levels of success at GCSE, where 70% of all results were A*/A or graded 9-7, is a tribute to the strength of the school’s diamond model of teaching. Boys and girls are taught separately from 11 to 16 within an otherwise co-educational school environment.

“Facilities are excellent and achievement is recognised across all walks of school life, not just in the examination halls. This is an outstanding school that serves the children of Leeds and the surrounding area well, offering myriad opportunities to succeed, learn and acquire skills that will benefit them throughout life.”

Sue Woodroofe, GSAL Principal, said: “I am absolutely delighted that GSAL has been named top independent secondary school in the north by The Sunday Times. This is outstanding recognition, on a national stage, of all that our pupils and staff do to make GSAL so special.

“I have the privilege of working with people of all ages, every day, who show passion, vision and ambition to aim high and commit themselves to be the very best that they can be, rooted in an unerring sense of decency, kindness and courtesy. Sincere thanks are also due to our parents for the part they play in our amazing school community.

“This is wonderful news – just when I think I could not be more proud of this school, I find that I am!”
