WI members spread the warmth with knits for school’s Malawi project

A talk by retired teacher Barry Brindley about his work in Malawi made such an impression on members of the Roundhay Women’s Institute (WI) that they got straight to work knitting blankets and stitching quilts.

The Malawi project at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), started by Barry 27 years ago, raises funds and collects essential goods and equipment to support impoverished communities in the country. Teachers and students regularly visit Malawi to give practical assistance and see how their donations have been put to use.

WI members Maggie Baker, June Wilson, Lesley Gray and Christine Frank visited the school to deliver their handiwork to Barry and meet students who had been on the Malawi tour.

Maggie said: “I’m not a knitter but I made an exception for this! I’m now on my second blanket and we make it a sociable activity by meeting for tea, chat and knitting.”

June said: “Barry’s talk was so interesting and we were surprised at the variety of things needed by the people in Malawi, even blankets as it gets cold at night. I fancied doing some knitting and four blankets later here I am!”

During their visit to GSAL, the WI members heard first hand from sixth form students Georgina Mordue, Ranji Venkateswaran and Katie Toogood about their experiences on last summer’s Malawi tour.

Meanwhile the very youngest pupils in the school, nursery to year 2 at Rose Court, have donated 400 pairs of shoes, inspired by their teachers who visited the country and were moved by the sight of children walking barefoot to school.
