Entry to GSAL Sixth Form

Sixth form at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) offers a superb co-educational experience encompassing so much more than simply academic study, and we wish to attract students to our sixth form who will fully grasp the opportunities on offer.

Entry requirements

Applicants in Year 11 at another school will be expected to achieve at least six B grades at GCSE. Admission will be subject to a satisfactory interview and reference from the current school.

In making a decision on whether to admit a student, we will take into account:

  • The student’s contribution to school life, his/her reports and disciplinary record
  • The student’s choice of A-level subjects and whether these are appropriate in light of his/her GCSE performance
  • Evidence of good attitude and work ethic, indicating the potential to succeed at A-level

Each A-level has subject specific entrance requirements, which can be found in Sixth Form Curriculum Choices 2017. The school reserves the right to decline entry to specific courses, however we will work with students and parents to explore alternative course choices that are in the student’s best interests.

Further to the introduction of the new GCSE curriculum and depending on the exam board, English and Maths GCSEs could be graded as 1-9 or A*-G in 2017. The new grading system will be phased in for other subjects by 2019. Grade 5/6 is equivalent to Grade B.

How to apply

The application deadline for sixth form is the end of November for the following September, although we may be able to consider later applications in certain circumstances.

Applications should be made using our online application form and will incur a £50 application fee.

Candidates will be invited for an interview with the Director of Sixth Form and the Head of Lower Sixth in the spring term, after their mock GCSE examinations. Following the interview and the receipt of the school report, we will advise applicants of the outcome. All offers of a place in sixth form are conditional upon satisfactory GCSE results, and will be reviewed when the results are released in August.
