Guidance for your future

We are committed to supporting all GSAL students as they work through important decisions about life after school. We believe there is no substitute for face-to-face guidance, and supplement this with a dedicated resource centre, a comprehensive intranet site and a monthly bulletin updating students on the opportunities available.

You will receive specialist support from our advice and guidance team, which includes our careers adviser, higher education (HE) coordinator and Oxbridge coordinator. We encourage students to seek advice from us whenever they like during their time with us, and we commit to assisting our students with university applications even after they have left school. Parents are welcome to get in touch too.

Lower Sixth students take the Centigrade test which profiles their interests, aptitudes and personal qualities, suggesting matches to suitable courses or alternative routes. The vast majority of our students progress to degree level study, and we launch our HE process in the Spring Term, when students receive their Centigrade reports and begin their research. We encourage students to attend university events and we offer advice every step of the way.

We provide specialist support to students applying to competitive courses such as medicine and dentistry. We are very proud of the success of our students in these areas with typically all applicants receiving an interview, and most offers of places. Our Oxbridge support programme ensures students receive specialist advice from the universities to support their application.

We also organise a series of visiting speakers from various professions and from HE, and give advice to those deferring university entry or choosing not to go on to HE.

Above all, we believe every student is an individual. We treat them as such, offering an open door policy and meeting with each student as often as is necessary so that we can effectively support their dreams with sound advice and guidance.
