Students Set Up Martin House Initiative

Wednesday 27 April 2011

A group of GSAL students is forging links with youngsters at Martin House as a way of sharing interests and building friendships.

The 13 and 14-year-old girls are developing the association already established between GSAL and the Boston Spa-based hospice to create opportunities for socialising and sharing the school’s superb facilities.

Martin House children and their families will be invited to join GSAL students during a family fun day to be held in the school grounds at Alwoodley Gates on Saturday, July 2, as part of the GSAL Celebration Weekend.

The students also want to build on previous fundraising and, to kick-start the project, they raised £130 at a lunch time bun sale which they presented to Martin House head of care, Sheila O’Leary, when she came to give them a talk on the work of the hospice.

As part of their initiative the girls have also set up a Community Links and Action Programme (CLAP) site on the school’s internal website which can be accessed by youngsters at Martin House.

GSAL history teacher, Sam Yates, who is working on the project with the students, said: “The pupils recognise the importance of establishing links with the community.  The project is in its early stages, but the girls have lots of enthusiasm and ideas which they hope to be able to expand across other schools and groups in the future.”
